cool mechanisms: spacebok leg design [updates]

We just want to touch on a cool piece of design briefly, not because it's super relevant to what we're doing but it has some interesting mechanical properties.



This is the leg design for SpaceBok by ETH Zurich, and we can see there's an interesting spring system involved here. As the leg retracts, the distance between the two middle pivot joints increase. If we pass a string through these regions and we attach the ends to springs inside the legs, as the leg compresses, the springs stretch and start to store potential energy which can be recovered on "flight" or future walking. It's a nifty mechanism!!!
